Meet our 2019 judges

Fabrice Calmes – FIFe
Fabrice is a French international FiFe judge. He is a public relations and marketing manager for a European energy company. He works in Strasbourg (France). He has studied journalism and is currently a member of the International Press Club. In 2010, to further his education in conjunction with his professional role, he undertook an Executive MBA in Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility. Since he was a child, he always had cats: Turkish van, household pet and later Siamese, Orientals and Ocicats. He never could find enough time to breed the way he would like due his professional responsibilities and because he is invited to judge all over Europe nearly every weekend. Nevertheless, in the future, he would like to start breeding again. He has always been involved in the cat fancy: President of the Cat Club de l’Est (France) for 8 years, Vice-President of FiFe for three years, President of the French feline federation for three years, Chairman of the technical commission from the FFH in Switzerland and member of the FiFe Judges and standards commission, etc. He first passed his examination for the semi-long hair cats (FiFe cat. 2) in 1994 than for the Persians and exotics cats (FiFe cat.1) in 2001. Since 2007, he has been judging short hair cats (FiFe cat. 3).

I have been involved in the cat fancy for over 20 years after purchasing my first purebred cats (a Birman neuter and a Turkish Van female) in 1992. I bred and showed Turkish Vans until 2000. In 1998 I decided to stop breeding Turkish Vans and import Norwegian Forest Cats. There were none in Australia at the time and I have been showing and breeding Norwegians for 16 years. I was Treasurer and Show Secretary of the Birman Club for a few years and am now Treasurer for the Longhair Cat Association. I have also been a steward for many years and I’m the editor of the Catching Up journal.

Since my childhood I have had animals in my life and it was inevitable that I would be involved with them as an adult. I have owned and successfully shown Labrador Retrievers in the U.K. In the early eighties I left the Channel Islands and emigrated to Australia with my family and my two Labradors. After thoroughly enjoying showing my dogs in the UK I then decided to look at the various cat breeds. I purchased two Siamese cats as pets in 1986 and this was invariably my introduction to the Cat Fancy. I have bred and shown Burmese, Siamese, and Oriental Shorthairs and have had considerable success under the "Ahzel" prefix. I have also owned a Devon Rex and our household currently includes a Scottish Fold plus British Shorthairs which I currently show. Not to forget our domestics which I have rescued and welcomed into our home, whilst they do not have a pedigree there is a place for them at shows and I take great pleasure in judging them and giving them awards. I have been actively involved in numerous clubs and have held various positions of Secretary of the Burmese Cat Society of A/Asia and President of the Oriental Cat Club of NSW. I gained my group 3 judges license with NSW CFA in 1999 and became an all shorthair judge in 2004. Having moved to ANCATS in 2006 I attained my group 1

I have always loved animals, especially cats, my first cat was a present for my 8th birthday, a cream Burmese. My mum and I joined the cat fancy and the Burmese cat club after buying our first show cat in 2007, and very naughty chocolate tortie Burmese. We also starting breeding Burmese around the same time under the prefix ’Misara’. I really enjoyed showing our cats and wanted to be more involved in the cat fancy, and when I thought I was ready and the judging course was offered I jumped at it. In my day to day life I am a theatre nurse at a major teaching hospital in Sydney. I find this work to be rewarding, challenging and very interesting as you never know what is going to come through the doors. Even though I am very new to the world of judging I hope to get the same fulfillment out of it as I do my job, because you never know what you’ll be faced with.
